Le Corbusier was commissioned to design the Villa Savoye in September 1928, at the age of forty-one. He described his feeling on first seeing the proposed site in his Oeuvre Complète :

“The view is delightful, the grassed areas are also very attractive, and the forest too, they should be left as untouched as possible. The house should be set down on the grass like an object, without disturbing anything around it”.

The villa is designed as a highly abstract blank shape, supported by think stilts, its facades characterised by a long uninterrupted horizontal bay.

The pillars have been arranged to break up the landscape with a regularity which does away with any concept of front, back or side of the house. The ground floor of the house, painted a shade of dark green, seems to disappear, leaving a feeling of lightness.

From the entrance, a ramp and a spiral staircase lead to the first floor.
